Antonio, Angelito
The head of a veritable family of painters, Angelito Antonio is one of the Philippine’s most well-loved artist patriarchs. His work almost always centers on the Filipino, be it a family seated at a dinner table laden with typical Filipino cuisine or a lone farmer cradling a rooster in his arms. It’s themes like these that Pinoy’s readily identify with and when Antonio goes to work it’s guaranteed to strike a chord with his countrymen.
Antonio also bears an undeniable influence on many of the country’s younger artists who emulate his themes but never quite capture the same effect. His paintings exude confidence; every line crawls across the canvas comfortably tracing shapes and figures that are later pervaded with bold, seemingly unfinished yet self-assured colors.
Antonio is a master, his art a fine tribute to both the richness and simplicity of Philippine culture.
